"We don't sleep on every mattress we make, but we stand behind every one of them." - Chuck England Sr. - Chuck England Jr.

There are many situations that require a custom size mattress set. These include, but are not limited to, Antique Beds, Platform Beds, Houseboats, Yachts, RV's, Cabin Cruisers, Horse Trailers, Sleepers in Tractor Trailers, Campers, etc. The most common situation requiring custom size mattresses are Antique Beds.

The majority of antique beds were handcrafted in the 17th and 18th century, and some early into the 19th century as well. Most were designed with a family or individual in mind - the size was sometimes dictated by the room size, the size of the person the bed was being crafted for or simply the materials at hand. In many cases the bed was handcrafted by the handyman of the family, out in the barn or woodshed , to meet his own specifications - as well as crafting their own odd size mattress at the same time. This meant there were a multitude of custom sizes, shapes and constructions, none of which were in any form of a standardized size. The most common of these odd size mattresses is referred to as the "Three Quarter Bed". This is a generic statement for any size bed that falls between the standard "Half" bed, which is now known as a "Twin" (38" x 80"), and the standard "Full" (54" x 75"). There are many aspects to be considered when producing odd size mattresses to fit an exising bedstead.

Another source for odd size mattresses is from the Swedish or European bed imports. These also come in a wide range of sizes mostly between a "Queen" (60" x 80") and a "King" (76" x 80"). Most are a platform design where only the mattress is required. When considering a mattress for a platform bed you should consider the plush or ultra plush mattress as all the comfort has to come from the mattress itself. Your custom size mattress will rest on the hard platform.

There are many other situations for which a custom mattress may be required. There may be medical or orthopedic reasons, or the physical size of an individual, sleeping space availability, replacing a waterbed bladder with a waterbed insert or simply personal likes or dislikes.
